
Hanks His next role, astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - reunited him with Ron Howard. The movie's performances as well as Kevin Bacon's performance in general were favorable by the critics. The film also received nine Academy Award nominations, winning two. Hanks later played Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). The following year, Hanks made his directorial debut in the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and decline of a popular 1960s group. He also took on the role of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine said that his performance was "charming" and the majority of experts agreed that Hanks performance earned him a place among the best romantic comedy actors of his time.
